Bellaclan Border Collies was established in 1998 by me, Laura. Named from my late fathers Irish heritage and the love he instilled in me for the breed. Bellaclan means "beautiful family". Fuelled by my intense love of dogs and my passion for this intensely loyal, healthy, versatile, and extremely intelligent breed, I breed AKC registered Border Collies suitable for both the show ring and as loving family pets. I take the Breeding of Border Collies very seriously. I show my dogs mainly in Canada (in CKC with MCN #'s) but have travelled the globe to Border Collie Specialty shows too. I am a member in good standing of the Border Collie Society of America (BCSA), of which I serve on a committee for, and the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC).
Located in Canada in a small town called Charing Cross which is just on the outskirts of Chatham-Kent, Ontario, I am basically with my dogs full time as I am an All-Breed Dog Handler/Trainer, my own dogs come with me to work often (dog shows). My Border Collies are at training classes frequently, I never stop training them. I enjoy spending most of my time grooming, training, and caring for their mental and physical needs.
Genetic health is important to me when breeding dogs. All breeding dogs are intensely heath screened for Hearing (BAER), Eyes (CAER), Hips & Elbows (OFA), and DNA tested for breed specific illness: CEA, CL, and TNS. I have now started testing for Reigns Syndrome, Early Onset Deafness, and Glaucoma...the latter two are not yet definite results from DNA but still usable information. At this time there is no test for seizures so I do in-depth research of lines, and to my knowledge as of this writing, have never produced a single epileptic dog. I am happy to show off official certificates of all health test results.
My pedigrees (dogs family trees) are made up of mostly Australian lines with some English lines thrown in along with a dash of Canadian working dogs which has proven to be a recipe for success for me. My Border Collies are made up some of the best the world has to offer, in my humble opinion, and I have carefully researched them before integrating them into my breeding program. I attend as many National Specialties (Border Collies only shows) around the globe so that I can meet with world famous breeders and see future breeding lines in person, and most importantly...to know the dogs temperaments before introducing them into my lines. I use the most up-to-date breeding and rearing methods to try to breed the best Border Collie I possibly can on a world scale. I know my standard are very high but there are enough irresponsibly bred Border Collies, I believe that if I add to the worlds gene pool, that I should only breed and add the very best.
Show Dogs that I own or have bred, have done very well in the show rings around the globe and we have many Champion Border Collies to our credit, competing and winning in not only Conformation at the speciality levels, but in Herding, Rally-O, Agility, Barn Hunt, and Obedience! Bellaclan Border Collies work many jobs that contribute greatly to many peoples lives, these include; Search and Rescue, Drug Detection, Service Dogs, Tracking Dogs, Emotional Support Animals, Therapy Dogs, Goose Control, and most importantly, much loved active Family Pets! I show my Border Collies frequently and most years have one out on the campaign trail to being top Border Collie in the country.
Vaccinations and nutrition is of great interest to the scholar within me. My Border Collies are treated like athletes and are fed a RAW diet of human grade organic muscle meat, bone, organ, and many supplements according to their individual needs and blood work. I developed a Bellaclan Vaccination Protocol that I use and thus frequently titer test my dogs, and nomograph titer test all dams prior to whelping, which tests their actual immunity and ability to pass on antibodies to their puppies through colostrum. This insures that non of my dogs nor pups are ever over vaccinated whilst in my care. I only give core vaccinations as indicated by these tests. Vaccinating a dog just-in-case that already has immunity can cause this immunity to not only lower, but can have devastating results and even lethal vaccination reactions. I am always a student in all things involved in breeding dogs to ensure that I am always learning and practicing the most up-to-date methods.
Rearing and training methods are so important! The method I use to raise my Border Collie puppies from the day they are born, and which I encourage to be continued by their new owners, is the Puppy Culture training and rearing method. There are so many advantages to rearing a litter using this technique. Some of which are; teaching them to learn, teaching them clicker training, teaching them that good things come from people, teaches them to think problems through and handle frustration, eradicating possible food aggression, and helping to ensure that they are well socialized during their time with me. Puppy Culture gives me an understanding of puppy development and how to handle each stage of it from a scientific and proven viewpoint.
I invite other Border Collie enthusiasts the get in touch with me as I love to talk about my dogs, pedigrees, training and all things "dog"!
