Border Collies are an exceptionally intelligent breed of dog and excel in many dog sports. Think about all the ways we entertain ourselves and enrich our own lives; TV, Books, Friends, Gyms, Classes, Work, Road Trips, Vacations etc. What does your dog have? Imagine if you were your dog and lived the life your dog does from day to day, would you feel that you are living your life to the fullest? Would you be happy if you lived your dogs life?
Participating in dog sports with your Border Collie is a good way to bond, give your dog a job, and enrich their live...and your own! It teaches your Border Collie positive behaviours. The more positive things they are trained to do, the less time they have to think up naughty things to do to entertain themselves. Your dog needs a life too, and as an owner it is your job to make sure your dog is given the opportunities to live a good life. A couple of walks a day and food is not enough for any dog...let alone a highly intelligent breed such as a Border Collie. The majority of behavioural issues with dogs is due to lack of training, exercise and enrichment. Obesity causes severe behavioural issues and it is also our job to keep our dogs slim and fit. A busy and tired dog is a good dog.
Most good dog obedience training clubs offer classes for many of the dog sports listed below and after you have completed puppy kindergarten and basic obedience type classes, they normally offer them. We encourage all of our owners to try to participate in these events and look at it as a hobby you do with your dog!
If your dog from us earns a title, please let us know so we can post it on our honour roll page and keep track of it!
Conformation is the most popular dog sport! Have you ever seen Westminster on TV? This is a conformation show. Conformation dogs shows started hundreds of years ago to asses the quality of breeding stock. From the outside it looks like a beauty pageant of sorts but really it is an assessment of a dogs structure and of it's traits according to the breed standard. Each breed has a written standard and they dogs are awarded who are as close to the standard in the judged opinion as possible. These shows also award dogs who are sound. To compete in conformation your dog must be show quality in structure and type and be very sound tempered as they will need to we touched by strangers (judges) and also not show aggression to hundreds of other dogs in close proximity. Most dogs who are bred from should be at least a conformation champion. Championship is obtained by beating a certain amount of other dogs to get enough points to ear the title "Champion".
Herding can be trained as a practical useful skill for your farm, as a hobby, or to compete at herding trials. There are many associations that run herding trials in addition to the CKC and AKC, some of which are ASCA, USBCHA, CBCA, ABCA, and AHBA, in North America. Herding trials specifically test a dogs skill to safely move various types of livestock. The dogs kind of act like fences that move and move the animals from point A to point B, and also separate them from each other as needed.
